What is an Open Water Course?

Have you ever wanted to learn how to scuba dive? You might have searched around online about scuba diving and found something called an open water course. You must be thinking that open water courses are something completely unrelated to a scuba diving course. This is where you are technically wrong. A scuba diving course can usually be completed over two to three days, while an open water course will take at least four to seven days. In this article we will be teaching you all about open water courses and the differences between an open water course and a scuba diving course.

Open water courses are usually held and trained by PADI official divers. They are usually held at one of their official man made diving sites at multiple different locations across Malaysia, or at some locations at open seas if you wish. Their courses are hosted by trained professionals who will help you learn how to properly scuba dive and other things such as how to put on the wetsuit, setting up and how to use the oxygen tank, how to manage your internal pressure when you are several meters underwater and hand signs to communicate when diving.

There are also a few differences between open water courses and scuba diving courses. We mentioned the differences in the duration of time it takes to complete these courses above, but there are also a few other differences. The amount of things to do to complete these courses are also different. For example, an open water course would have five confined water (pool) skill practice sessions to complete before you are awarded with the open water divers certificate and license. In comparison, a scuba diving course would only require you to complete three of those five confined water (pool) skill practice sessions. You would also have to complete four open water (ocean/lake) dives before you are awarded with the open water divers certificate and license. On the other hand, you would only need to complete two of the four open water (ocean/lake) dives to complete your scuba diving training. 

The main difference between the open water course and the scuba diving training course is that the scuba diving training course is roughly half of the open water course. With half of the things required to do compared to the open water course, the scuba diving training course is easier and also takes a much lesser time to complete compared to the open water course. This means that it is easier to be a scuba diver compared to an open water diver. Although scuba diving is easier to do, there are also certain limitations between scuba divers and water divers. Limits such as the depth of water you are allowed to dive in is also apparent. Scuba divers may only dive under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional to a maximum depth of 12 metres/40 feet. While open water divers can plan and execute dives with a certified buddy or dive professional to a maximum depth of 18 meters/60 feet.
